In honour of Star Wars Day, I had to share one of our absolute highlights from Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios… the day my husband and daughter built a lightsaber together!

We’d booked a spot at Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers, and from the moment they checked in, it was clear this wasn’t just another theme park activity!
My husband describes the whole experience as immersive and a chance to live out his childhood fantasies!
Inside the dimly lit workshop they were invited by the gatherers to choose their Kyber crystal. Which is the glowing heart of the lightsaber. My husband and daughter, with zero hesitation, chose a red Kyber crystal… yes, the colour of the Dark Side. Should I be concerned? Maybe. But hey, every family has a Sith Lord or two, right?
Next came the hilt, the casing, and the hands-on construction. The whole process is exciting and engaging. It’s a wonderful experience for any Star Wars fan.
The most magical moment comes at the end, when each lightsaber is placed into the activation chamber. As Master Yoda’s voice echoes through the room, builders grip their hilts, ignite their sabers, and lift them high, casting a glow that fills the space with pure Star Wars magic!

Yes this experience is pricey but in our opinion it was worth the splurge. The whole experience at Savi’s Workshop took around 20 minutes and more than just building a souvenir, it was immersive and unforgettable. If you have a little Padawan (or a big one!) who loves Star Wars, this is one experience I would highly recommend!
You’re given a padded case to transport your lightsaber, which makes travelling with it much easier. It’s always best to double-check with your airline, but Virgin allowed us to take it as hand luggage and stored it safely in their onboard wardrobe for the flight home. They were very familiar with the lightsaber, they must be a common souvenir! In fact, there were 3 more on our flight alone! It’s also worth popping a luggage tag on the case, just in case there’s any mix-up.
At the time of writing this post the cost of building your own lightsaber at Savi’s Worlkshop in Hollywood Studios is $249.99 per lightsaber, plus tax. The experience area is limited to the builder and one Guest and at least one person in the party must be aged 14 or older.
