Here for the tips?

Don’t worry, you’re in the right place! From apps to attractions, dining to downtime, here’s what every first-timer should know before heading to the magic at Walt Disney World. Trust me, a few smart moves now can save you time, money, and stress later. (Looking for Disneyland Paris tips? I’ve got you!)

They’re real, tried-and-tested tips from a Disney-loving mum who’s been there, done that, and packed the ears.

Top Tips for Disney First-Timers

1. Plan Early – Like, Really Early!

Disney trips are best when planned months in advance. Dining, park passes, and special extras can book up quickly, you can often book 12 to 14 months in advance of your stay.

2. Stay On-Site If You Can

Disney hotels come with perks like early park entry, free transportation, and the option to book dining and Lightning Lanes ahead of others. It often works out better value when you factor in dining plans and transport.

For more information on the free Disney Transportation options, read these complete guides to the Monorail and Skyliner.

3. Get to Know the My Disney Experience App

This is your best friend! You’ll use it to book dining, mobile order food, check wait times, manage Lightning Lanes, and even see your park photos.

4. Don’t Overdo It

It’s tempting to go from rope-drop to fireworks every day, but little legs (and grown-up ones!) get tired fast. Schedule in breaks, rest days, or pool time, especially in the Florida heat!

5. Book Dining in Advance

If you’re on a dining plan or have must-visit restaurants (like character meals), get your bookings in as soon as your window opens. (60 days before your arrival date for Resort guests!) They go fast, especially popular ones like Cinderella’s Royal Table, Ohana’s and Space 220.

6. Use Lightning Lane Passes Wisely

Disney World’s Lightning Lane system is an optional paid service that allows you to skip the standby queue and join a shorter line for select attractions and experiences. It’s not always essential but is definitely beneficial if the parks are busy or you are short on time. I can help you learn the system and devise the best strategy to get the most from your money.

7. Bring the Right Shoes

You’ll be walking a lot—we’re talking thousands of steps a day—so comfortable, well-broken-in shoes are essential. But here’s a tip most people don’t realise: bring more than one pair! Florida rainstorms can be intense, and I’ve personally splashed through puddles up to my shins in Magic Kingdom. If one pair gets soaked, you’ll be so glad to have a dry backup. Alternating shoes also helps reduce blisters since you’re not putting pressure on the same spots every day. Trust me, your feet will thank you.

8. Pack Snacks – Your Wallet (and Kids) Will Thank You

Park snacks can be pricey, and while the themed treats are fun, the costs can really add up. Bringing your own snacks is a smart way to save money and keep everyone happy between meals.
If you’re travelling with picky eaters, pack some familiar favourites from home, or plan a quick stop at Walmart or Target once you arrive to stock up on non-perishable, non-melting options like cereal bars, pretzels, crackers, and dried fruit. They’re easy to pop in your park bag and come in handy during long queues or while waiting for a parade to start.

9. Stay Hydrated the Smart Way

Florida heat is no joke, and staying hydrated is so important—especially for little ones. The good news? Most quick-service restaurants will give you free cups of iced tap water, so be sure to bring your own refillable water bottles to make the most of it.
If you’re staying at a Disney resort, you can also grab a resort refillable mug, which gives you unlimited soft drinks, tea, and coffee at your hotel (they don’t work in the parks, but they’re great for downtime or pool days!).
A little heads-up: Florida tap water has a distinct taste that some people find off-putting. Packing a small bottle of squash or water flavouring from home can make a big difference—especially if it helps keep everyone sipping throughout the day.

10. MagicBands or Park Tickets?

MagicBands are a wearable device you can purchase whilst you are there. You can connect it to you My Disney Experience app and use it for everything from scanning into the parks, opening your hotel room, scan in for your Lightning Lanes and even pay for things! You can still use your phone for everything, but MagicBands (especially MagicBand+) make things especially handy when you have your hands full of Disney merchandise or small children!

11. Use a Travel Agent Who Gets It!
